Descendants 3, Soundtrack – Review

by Kaya Savas

Decendants3The musical fantasy Descendants 3 again stars Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson, and Booboo Stewart as classic Disney villains’ children. The soundtrack includes seven original songs. Highlights include the Carson-led pop song “One Kiss” and the Hot 100-charting “Queen of Mean” by Sarah Jeffery as the daughter of Princess Aurora. Non-originals include Mitchell Hope’s acoustic partial-reprisal of the Adam Schlesinger-penned “Did I Mention” from the first Descendants and China Anne McClain’s cover of Randy Newman’s “Dig a Little Deeper” from The Princess and the Frog. The soundtrack closes out with a whimsical orchestral score suite by composer David Lawrence. Descendants 3 became the third straight release in the franchise to reach the Top Ten of the Billboard 200.

“Do What You Gotta Do” is a lively tune with thumping beats and high stepping horns — featuring Dove Cameron and Cheyenne Jackson in a duet. Cameron utilizes every corner of her voice with an ease of transition between the vocal registers. Jackson has a strong and powerful command of his instrument and equally shines on this tune. The tune is fun and flirty, and in the tradition of “Anything, You Can Do (I Can Do Better)” from Annie Get Your Gun is the battle between the sexes.

In a larger cast performance, “Break This Down” features the late Cameron Boyce, Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson Brenna D’Amico, Thomas Doherty, Zachary Gibson, Mitchell Hope, Sarah Jeffery, Jadah Marie, China McClain, Dylan Playfair, and Booboo Stewart. The tune is a beautiful anthem of group spirit of harmony and unity, a positive reminder we are all in this together.

Disney has put together a cast of incredibly talented young lions. Each versatile and fabulously talented. The Descendants 3 soundtrack is brimming with great performances and well-crafted tunes, that even if you haven’t seen the movie, you can enjoy each song as a stand-alone soundtrack.
