Kelsea Ballerini, The First Time

by John Gaddis

Kelsea_BalleriniThis is the first album from 21 year old Kelsey Ballerina. Ballerini is the writer or co-writer of every song on this album and as a father of two daughters, I can say that her lyrics make this an album I am proud to share with them.

The big song right now is “Love Me Like You Mean It”. While it is representative of all the songs on the album, it’s songs like “Second Hand Smoke” that speak to how great this album and Kelsea Ballerini will be. “Got his eyes, got her hair, so do I get their mistakes, I know that you can’t walk across a bridge that’s already burned, what am I supposed to do, I can’t help that they chose to breathe it in, but I don’t want to choke on that secondhand smoke”. It’s a very powerful and personal song that I think may listeners can relate to.

Empowerment is big in young female singers these days. Like Megan Traynor in the Pop World, this album will be an inspiration to young women everywhere. IMHO, no matter what the age, you’ll appreciate just how good this album is. 4.5/5 stars.
